What Will My Plan Cover?
Insurance coverage for Diabetes Self Management Training or Medical Nutrition Therapy depends upon the terms of your individual plan. In general, HMO plans may require a co-pay, like when you go to the doctor’s office. Most PPO plans require you to pay a deductible, a certain dollar amount out of your pocket each year before the plan starts to cover the services. After the satisfying the deductible, you pay only a percentage of the contracted fee for the service, and your insurance covers the rest (i.e. 20% / 80%). If your health plan is through your job, then benefits and coverage are determined by the employer.
Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is essential for good diabetes management. Our Registered Dietitian creates an individualized meal plan for every patient based on nutritional considerations such as, lifestyle, cultural identity and diabetes management goals.
Medicare Part B will pay for MNT for people who have any of these conditions: diabetes, kidney disease that does not require dialysis, and kidney disease after transplant.
Some private insurances will pay for MNT for people with diabetes. Some will also pay for MNT for impaired glucose tolerance (pre-diabetes), obesity, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol) and hypertension (high blood pressure).
